WHEREABOUTS
A book that can instantly remind you of yourself or someone you know. Written in a snippet of life format, where the protagonist describes an event in her life, in no particular order. The novel transcends beautifully exploring raw human feelings of loneliness, desire, adulthood, needing attention, admiration, distraction and inquisitiveness.
The narrative is carefully drafted using 5 human senses to describe her everyday events. She takes us through her surroundings, her tea pot, desserts, beaches, strangers, her relationship with her friend, ex- lovers, how she is usually tempted to decline an invitation etc. It is interesting how she meanders through the streets, finds interesting people and follows them without intimidating them or attempting to have a conversation. She just observes and takes us through her complexly wired neural network of thoughts. She herself being a 46 year old unmarried woman, is constantly reminded of her relationship with her late father and her aging mother. She very casually says “ In spring I suffer”, “Every time I swim I feel cleansed as if from within”.
Although there isn’t a fixed plot in the premise, that doesn't take away from the gripping tales. The journey starts with her comfort , her attachment to her existing residence, her monotony and then transitions to a change, reminding a part of us all meanwhile.
